The Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yaraha (SASY) Neighborhood is frequently referred to as the “Atwood” or “Schenk-Atwood” neighborhood to most Madisonians. Atwood or Schenk-Atwood seems to roll off the tongue a bit easier. This area has a vibe of diversity, vitality, and energy. People who live here love the connected feel of a more urban environment with plenty of restaurants, parks, and schools within walking distance.
What Does the Neighborhood Look Like?
Much of the SASY (Schenk-Atwood-Starkweather-Yahara) neighborhood was developed between 1900 and 1940 and consequently has some of the “charm” found during homes of this period. Some might call it the classic traditional old world neighborhood. The area tends to attract people with a more funky and creative style. Home values can range dramatically depending on how close you find yourself to Lake Monona with homes right on Lake Monona (or with direct views) being the most expensive. Prices are bit cheaper right along East Washington ave and just North of Milwaukee St. Many of the homes are 1 ½ story bungalow/cape cod styles, or 2 story colonial/craftsman. For those that love riding their bike, there’s easy access to a bike path that can take you to other parts of Madison.
What’s Going on Nearby?
Olbrich park is the largest and most notable park in this area. Olbrich gardens is a favorite destination for those that love plants. Circle Park features a round about for the nearby residents to play. Hudson Park and Yahara Place Park both hug the north part of Lake Monona and attract many visitors at all times of the year. There’s a bustling revitalization occurring along Atwood Ave with ton’s of restaurants and new businesses coming in. Some favorites include the Alchemy, One Barrel Brewing, and Monty’s Blue Plate. If you’re looking for some entertainment, check out the Barrymore Theatre for various shows. Other great things are always happening at the Goodman Community Center. Downtown Madison is two miles to the Southwest. East Towne Mall is four or five miles East. Easy connection to the interstate is only a few blocks away on Highway 30 and then to Interstate 90-94.
