Why Do People Live Here?
High Crossing is among the newest neighborhoods on Madison’s east side. Development of farmland surrounding the city’s eastern border began here in the late 1990s and has brought new homes, offices and businesses to the area. High Crossing’s strategic location affords fast access to the major highway arteries in the area, as well as some of the city’s most popular shopping destinations. Still, nestled along the rolling farmland that buffers the city’s eastern border lends rural appeal to this versatile community. Felland Park, located on the High Crossing’s east border, makes it easy to enjoy that rural appeal, too. It provides nearly 14 acres of rolling green space. High Crossing Park, located near the center of the neighborhood, offers an additional six acres of green space for neighbors to enjoy. Convenient location, rural appeal and newer developments are the hallmarks of High Crossing.
What Does the Neighborhood Look Like?
High Crossing’s residential development came to the rolling farmlands that surround northeast Madison in the late 1990s, and that momentum has continued well into the 2000s. Today, the average home was built in the neighborhood in 2002. That means houses here often feature modern amenities and design features. A selection of newer townhouses and condominiums in High Crossing, coupled with its close proximity to employers in the area, makes the neighborhood a popular home for young professionals. Much of the housing stock is located south of Lien Road. Some of the area’s most vibrant commercial areas that boast local eateries, retailers and service providers are located north of Lien Road.
What’s Going on Nearby?
High Crossing’s close proximity to the interchange of Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Highway 151 makes it one of the east side’s most accessible neighborhoods. Surrounding communities are a stone’s throw away. Sun Prairie is about five miles north, and Cottage Grove is about nine miles southwest of High Crossing. Downtown Madison, meanwhile, is seven miles south west of the neighborhood. East Towne Mall is less than three miles north of High Crossing, and popular commercial districts along East Washington Avenue and Highway 30 offer additional shopping and dining options for neighbors.
