Hawthorne Elementary School, located just west of North Fair Oaks Avenue, is an anchor of the community. Madison East High School, meanwhile, is located just north. Some of the area’s most vibrant commercial districts are also within walking distance of Hawthorne neighbors. The East Washington Avenue commercial corridor runs along the neighborhood’s western boundary, and additional businesses and service providers are stationed along Stoughton Road on the community’s eastern border. Whether neighbors are heading downtown, north, east or west, Hawthorne’s central location and close proximity to traffic arterials simplifies the commute.
What Does the Neighborhood Look Like?
Mid-century development brought a vibrant residential community to Hawthorne, and an active neighborhood association has worked over the years to strengthen the neighborhood. Today, homes are situated on a grid of residential streets that extend north from Highway 30 to North Stoughton Road. Hawthorne offers a broad selection of affordable homes. That makes the neighborhood popular among first-time homebuyers. The community also offers a number of duplexes and townhouses, which brings additional housing opportunities to the neighborhood.
What’s Going on Nearby?
There are plenty of opportunities to shop and dine within Hawthorne’s borders. Brigham Park, located at the heart of the community, also offers a pocket of green space for neighbors to enjoy. Downtown Madison is about four miles south of the neighborhood. East Towne Mall, one of the east side’s most popular commercial destinations, is less than four miles north. The north side of Madison is also minutes away, which puts the Dane County Regional Airport, Madison College and some of the city’s largest employers less than three miles away. Surrounding communities are nearby, too. Monona is about six miles south of Hawthorne, Sun Prairie is about eight miles north, and Cottage Grove is about eight miles west.
