Why Do People Live Here?
The McClellan Park neighborhood on Madison’s east side is a community on the move. The area has seen an outpouring of new residential development since the mid-2000s. Still, a strong sense of community has already taken hold here. Neighbors meet every Wednesday evening from spring to fall for the Capitol View Farmers Market. The market offers local fare and a casual venue for McClellan Park neighbors to meet. At North Star Park, which lies at the heart of the community, neighbors created a unique ceramic tile foundation for a water fountain that will beautify the park for decades to come. The community has also worked to beautify Dominion Pond and has secured city funds to do so. Chili cook-offs, holiday parties, parades, picnics and community bike rides round out the schedule of events in this active community.
What Does the Neighborhood Look Like?
More than half the neighborhood’s land is currently set aside for agricultural use, and the vast majority of the homes in McClellan Park were built after 2004. McClellan Park is home to a number of subdivisions that include Grandview Commons, Covered Bridge, Birchwood Ridge, Rustic Acres and the Jubilee. These developments feature newer homes that range in size from 1,500 to 2,500 square feet. Lot sizes are also generous. The area also features a variety of condominiums and townhomes along its southwest and southeast corridors.
What’s Going on Nearby?
McClellan Park offers the comforts of country living with all the amenities of city life within reach. Downtown Madison and Capitol Square are about seven miles west of the community. East Town Mall and the commercial district along East Washington Avenue are about five miles north of McClellan Park. Cottage Grove is about three miles east of McClellan Park, and Sun Prairie is about nine miles north. McClellan Park is also less than a mile south of the Interstate 90-94 interchange on Madison’s east side, which simplifies long-distance travel to the north, south and east. Closer to home, neighbors enjoy local restaurants and shops in Madison and Cottage Grove. Commercial development is also underway within McClellan Park’s own borders, too. The neighborhood’s Town Center is anchored by a Copps Market grocery store, and additional two-story commercial development has emerged in the area as well.
